Free Web Hosting - Not As Good As It Seems!

Many of you who are beginners in the web design industry will want to start off with a basic, free web hosting service that provides a good amount of features, bandwidth and web space. I know, I've been with a lot of free web hosts.

So what makes the free web hosts so good looking? Well, of course, there's the point that it is completely free, with no hidden costs or catches, unlike those "Post2Host" sites, which I personally really don't like becuase you're spending all of your time, in fact, more of your time posting on forums than creating your actual website!

Every month or so, I look on this website, () for new web hosting services to see if there are any upgrades I can upgrade tofrom my current hosting.

There are many things I check before choosing and signing up for a free web hosting service:

If the web host you are looking at checks all the points above, then it will probably do a good job for you and your website. However, sometimes it seems that after a while being with the web host you're with, the speeds you get deteriorate. It's almost as if, for the first month or so, you're on a list of "new people", who WILL get full speed and a reliable FTP server, but then after that, it just seems like you're on a list of "Oh, they've been with us for a while so they know we're good so we'll just put them on the low speed list to reduce CPU usage" then that's a bad thing.

I have experienced this, in fact, I still am, because the web host I am with did indeed start off really well. They stuck to their promises. But after a while, I find myself seriously struggling to upload anything to my website, which is, of course, a major problem for me, because I like to keep my website updated with blog posts and tutorials.

There are very few web hosting companies who will indeed provide a 100% reliable web hosting service. If you manage to find one, please leave a comment suggesting your ideas.

OK, that's it for this article, you can check out my website at and obviously, my other Bukisa content as well.

Thanks for reading. :)

How to sell products and services online by building your own website on a shoestring budget

Whole books could be and have been written on the subject of selling products and services online. I will limit this to some basic first steps for those who want to set up their own website and start selling on a shoestring. You must first ask some basic questions for each step in this process.

What am I selling?

This may seem obvious but what you decide to sell affects the type of website you build. If you plan to buy wholesale products and resell them, you will probably be handling a whole catalog of products from your wholesaler. You will need some kind of dynamic, ecommerce website with a shopping cart and the ability to process credit card payments. If you are making your own products, you will need your own website with an order form and payment buttons or a shopping cart or someway to take payments. Here is a list of questions, by no means exhaustive, to ask yourself about your products:

1) If I am buying wholesale, will I buy the products, store them, then ship them out myself?

2) If I am buying wholesale, will I have the products dropshipped to my customer (the customer places the order with you, you place the order with the wholesaler, and the wholesaler ships the product to your customer with your name on it)?

3) If I am making my own products, how will I store them, price them, and ship them?

4) How many products will I sell?

5) Do my products have variations such as size, color, etc.?

6) Will I sell digital products?

7) How will I take payments?

Again, how you answer these questions will determine the type of website you build. For instance, the answer to #5 may determine what shopping cart you use.

Can I build the website myself or do I need a professional?

If recording on a VCR seems frightening, you probably should find a web designer. You can find a wide range of pricingjust try a Google search. If I were going to find a designer, I would probably stick with someone local unless I found a really great price. You just never know what you might get on the Internet and end up paying more than you can afford. Building a website yourself is really not as difficult as it seems, and there are a lot of choices. Costs can run from a few dollars a month to nothing but your time and labor. You should decide if you want to pay for web hosting or find a free site. There are pros and cons for both:

Paid Web Hosting: You can get some good deals at decent web host companies such as Host Monster, Blue Host, Lunarpages, etc. There are lots of choices but dont get overwhelmed. Always start with a search for web hosting and review. You can find lots of reviews and rankings for most of the major hosts. Check four review sites and find the web host that appears on all four, and meets your requirements for price, storage (you need space for all those pictures, videos, and cool stuff youre planning), bandwidth (my definition: the amount of traffic your website can get before your web host demands more money), ecommerce capabilities, etc. Average price is about $5 or $6 dollars per month though you usually have to pay for a whole year up front. Most give you one free domain name as well for a savings of about $9 or $10 dollars.

If youve never had a website before be prepared for a bit of a learning curve. Once you sign up you will be handed a CPanel and turned loose on the world wide web. Dont panic. Explore your CPanel (or control panel) firstit will have things like email accounts, a site builder of some kind, lots of things youve never heard of like Mysql, Cron jobs, MIME, Ruby on Rails, etc. It hopefully will have Fantastico and/or Simple Scripts. These two will help you install the software to build your website. They will also uninstall them so dont be afraid to check out all the programs available. Follow the instructions, dont panic and utilize the help sections and forums. Some of the programs that will be provided include: Joomla, Magento, OSCommerce, Cube Cart. If I can build a website myself, anyone can.

Free Websites

There are lots and lots of free websites. Again, do a search for free web hosting and review. Check which has a great chart listing 254 free hosts. Many of these are free because they place banner ads on your site; others limit storage and bandwidth and hope you pay for their premium services; some are easy to use but not very customizable.

A few of the ones Ive used are: ads and they do have a premium service. Wix is all flash and very fun to play around withits just drag and drop. I have found it to be a bit buggy but that may just be my browser. For selling products, they provide flash Paypal buttons. Yola.com (formerly synthasite.com) is another free oneno ads and no limits on storage or bandwidth. You can only use their templates and theres no way to access the CSS, although they say theyre working on this. Again, Paypal buttons is the way to sell products and services online with this site. Yola is very easy to understand for even the newbiest Newbie. A third free site is no ads, 100MB storage and 1GB bandwidth. They also have premium services. This is also very easy to use, and you can download their templates to customize the CSS and some HTML. You can use Paypal buttons or they have a new ecommerce program. The free one allows only ten products. With all of these you can use your own domain name, b ut I wouldnt buy them from these websites as they all charge too much. You should be able to get a domain name for $10 dollars or less and have it redirected to your free website.

The Internet provides a lot of choices for building your own website. You can get online and selling your products or services with a budget as low as $10 and your time and labor.

How to Find Cheap Low Cost Web Hosting

Going for cheap web hosting, however, doesn't mean sacrificing quality--after all, what's the point of even having a website if the company you registered with could disappear at any moment, taking your website with it? If you want the best cheap low cost web hosting, learn exactly how to find it.

Step 1: Choose between free and commercial hosting. While there are definite advantages to cheap web hosting, free web hosting is cheaper than even the cheapest web hosting (at least in terms of cash). The non-monetary cost of free web hosting is that ads are usually required to be a part of your web page, your domain name is not completely customizable and is fixed with the company you register with, features are limited, you may be restricted to the host's website builder and templates, and bandwidth and file size may be less than you need. If you buy cheap low cost web hosting, all of these problems vanish.

Step 2: Search the internet--the simplest step in finding cheap low cost web hosting. Target input from forums by adding the word "forum" after your search. Browse the results and soak up the info.

Step 3: Check out listings of hosts that offer the best cheap web hosting such as (link and subsequent links to sites in Resources section), b2evolution's Low Cost Hosting section, and thewebhostinghero.com's Cheap Web Hosting Companies section.

Step 4: After finding a potential cheap low cost web hosting company, perform an internet search on the host's name followed by the word "review" or phrase "customer review." Compare reviews from multiple sites so you get the best picture of what that host is about.

Step 5: Get the features you want. With so many features to consider, the best way to know what features you want is to compare the features of several hosting plans side by side. If one plan has something the other doesn't, look into what that features is and if it's worth it.

Step 6: Buy the right length plan. Cheap low cost web hosting plans are usually offered in periods of one month, six months, one year, and two years. The longer the plan is that you choose, the better the deal. Keep in mind, however, that once you choose a web host, you'll be stuck with it for whatever length of time you paid for.

Tip: If you enter a site, make plans to buy, and then get distracted and put off the buying until some other day--you might find the price has increased the next time you visit. To get the price back to what it was, search the internet for something like "top 10 web hosts," and click through another website to get to the host that you want to buy from. If you clicked through the right website, your discount should be back.

Dedicated Hosting

A Look into the Economy Web Hosting Web hosting is the process of renting a space in a web server. A website is described as a collection of files that are connected with HTML codes in order to display texts and graphics on a computer. A website will only be considered complete once it is displayed on the internet. And in order to be seen by the world, the computer should be connected to the internet. Web hosting is commonly used by people to promote products and services online. However, in order to achieve your needed results, it is recommended that you choose the best web hosting service that can meet your specific needs. Due to the increasing and changing demands of users, manufacturers have developed various web hosting services in order to provide for the specific needs of each user. Always remember that any computer can function as a web server, but what makes it a server is the software that it contains. When a user decides to buy dedicated server, he/she should be aware that the monthly fees to be paid includes the maintenance and the upgrading cost of the systems software, the price of keeping it available online for 24 hours every day, 7 days a week in a protected data system with a powerful internet connection. Listed below are the different types of web hosting services available. SHARED HOSTING In a shared hosting service, several websites share a common web server. A physical web server can host numerous websites at a time depending on the type of web host. Web servers contain high quality and powerful computer that can support a large number of websites without encountering any problems. However, it is unavoidable for a web server to encounter some problems with regard to the speed of the computer. This is the reason why it is important for the hosting service to charge fees that will be used for the maintenance and upgrading of their services. DEDICATED HOSTING In this type of web hosting, a specific web server is assigned to a single user. Because of this, the user has the option to host multiple websites, can change the configuration of the software and can even handle greater site traffic when necessary. Because of these features, most users opt to buy dedicated server as compared with the shared hosting. In the dedicated server review, it is indicated that a good dedicated server usually costs from $200 to $500 every month. CO-LOCATION HOSTING In a co-location hosting service, the user owns the web server hardware, while in a dedicated hosting service, the user rents the web server during the hosting period. Since the user owns the web server in a co-location hosting, it gives him more flexibility when it comes to control and maintenance. Because of such features, the cost of a co-location hosting depends on the bandwidth and rack space required and can range from $500 to $1000 per month. Most web services offer economy web hosting plans. An economy web hosting service provides everything that the customer needs for personal use or for a small business.

3 Simple Steps to Your Own Website - Explained.

So you want to build that website for whatever reason, perhaps youve started a business or simply wish to share pictures of the new addition to your family. Let me tell you its easier than you think all you need is directions that you can follow and you will soon be online.

Lets talk what it will cost upfront. For $10 - $20/month you can have a working website (Imagine: ), available to anyone in the world with internet access. Thats a trip to your favourite fast food joint. (Yes, you can afford it!) There are also some ways of getting a free site still residing at , but lets learn about all those weird internet terms first.

There are 3 basic components required to building a personal, custom website. You need:- A domain name- A hosting account and- Content written in HTML or some other web language. I know, whats a domain name!!!?

Here is an analogy I teach:

You live in a home that is built on a certain piece of land (that you rent or buy). That piece of land has a specific address.

Your website (a collection of individual web pages) sits on a hosting account that you rent. That hosting account is found at a specific address called a domain name.

Your Home Your WebsiteYour Street Address: e.g. 1 John St, Anytown Your domain name: e.g. Your plot of land Your hosting accountYour physical house Your web content

Here is the 3 step process:STEP 1: Choose your addressSTEP 2: Rent some space on a computer connected to the internetSTEP 3: Build the house you want and place it on the space you bought in step 2

Lets explain each step:STEP 1: Choose your address (a domain name)With the internet you can choose what you want your address to be (your domain name). What are you selling? What would make a cool name? Understand that after over 10 years of public internet access a lot of good names have been taken. So get creative, and be unique but understandable. An easy place to start with is your full name for a family/personal site or your product name for a business site. Make a list of about 10 possibilities that you like in this format Move to the next step.

STEP 2: Rent some space on a computer connected to the internet (A hosting account)With a quick search for the words Web Hosting on the internet, you get a list of web hosting companies all eager to sell or rent you some space on their computer. GoDaddy.com and 1and1.com are some recommended companies feel free to look into others, but there are thousands upon thousands so dont waste your time searching for the cheapest (you pay for what you get, but $10+ will get you a decent hosting account.

Many of the hosting companies will either give you or sell you your choice of domain name at the same time you start your hosting account. Bring out your list from STEP 1, and when instructed in the purchase process, enter in your first domain name choice. You will be informed if that name is available or not. Keep trying out your names in order of your preference until you find on that is available. Finish the purchase process and let the hosting company instruct you on how to access you account. (Theyll send you an email and if you go with one of the companies I recommended, you can call them with your questions.)

STEP 3: Build the house you want and place it on the space you bought in step 2You have some choices to make here:A - You can ask someone to build you a site.B - You can build it yourself.C - Use a free website builder (like a blog)Each has its pros and cons.

The first option is great if you can afford it and can find someone reliable. If you want cheap, post a job at your local high school someone in computer club will be able to help you for really cheap. The problem is that they may not always be around when you need them to make changes. Enter choice B

Its great to learn a new skill, and you can learn for free online just invest a little time. Remember once you know how you own that knowledge forever and you will never depend on someone else to build your site. Again search online for how to build a website They will tell you how to design, build and upload your site onto your hosting account form STEP 2.

If you dont really require a customized design and all you want to do is place some text and perhaps some pictures online. I suggest starting whats called a blog - these are often free, and have a really simple HTML CODE FREE way of adding your content. All you do is type and publish. You can often still have your own domain name here, but each blogging company is different. Again search online for blogging and read what the various companies offer.

ContentThere is one thing that is really important and that ONLY you can do! That is come up with the content and the idea. Think about what you have to offer and what problem it solves for your visitors and prepare your content so as to answer that problem. E.g. You write great jokes. People are looking for jokes your website should give people some jokes and perhaps they can register for your daily joke email. Write simply, write short, write clearly. As time goes on, remember to keep your site fresh. Keep the content updated and relevant to your ideal visitors.

The goal of this article was to give you easy steps of how to get a website for yourself. Naturally you can learn more about each step, and there are many people who can give you help, but now you can start the journey. Create your list of domain names, purchase a hosting account (including the domain name you want) and build your site and keep the content fresh.

In future articles Ill take about next steps:

- I build it, but they aint coming to see it.

- I built it, but nobodys buying

- I built it, but I dont know how to improve it.

A journey of a million miles starts with one step so go to step 1 and start. (Dont worry this is not a long journey but its exciting!).
